*January 16
is a Benefit performance for the
Leona Mitchell Music Camp

About the Leona Mitchell Music Camp:
I
t takes place in early summer each year. Approximately 50 Children are chosen to be in the camp. The ages range from 5 to 18 years of age. The children are allowed to be in the camp at no charge to them.

The camp has completed its third season in 2007. The Children attend the camp for four weeks with intense training taking place twice a week for four hours a day. The children get instruction on how to handle fear while performing, as well as stage deportment, breathing exercises and free style dance.

Each year an opera is chosen where the children listen and learn about the Opera plot and its characters. This year "Un Ballo in Maschera" by Verdi was chosen. This opera session is taught by Mr. Elmer Bush and Miss Mitchell. Miss Mitchell also has some private coaching sessions with a few chosen operatic hopefuls.

This year's theme was "Music Legends" which encompassed Blues to Opera. The children did dances and skits on such legends as Harry Belafonte to Michael Jackson and Britany Spears. They culminated the evening, along with Miss Mitchell, with a dance and song routine from Verdi's opera, "The Masked Ball-" complete with costume gowns and masks. The finale of the show was the children joining Miss Mitchell in singing "He's Got the Whole World in His Hands."

BCD concerts have been called "
Life-affirming", "show-stopping", "Like Babette's feast for the ear" by reviewers and audience members lucky enough to have seen our previous performances. Don't miss out on this heartbreakingly beautiful and thrilling concert.
